New York Kathak Festival - Home Stage season 1, Ep#1

This dance piece is Sugandh's interpretation of one the Ashta Nayikas, Vasaksajja, the one who dresses herself for the union with her lover. The choreography shows Nayika in her bed-chamber filled with lotus and garlands. She is dressing up with big expectations of love. Once they meet, they dance together to celebrate their relationship. With a few Bandish, Tukdas and Tihais, she presents this piece on 16 matra - Teental.

I am River

This dance piece is an ode to the Indian festival, Pushkaram, a festival dedicated to
worshiping of rivers.

The concept of our choreography portrays the story of a river traveling through mountain
peaks and crossing forests. The current of life is moving the river along in a direction that
excites and scares her. She is progressing toward something she didn’t anticipate, but now
she is traveling down this path. She wants to run away, to turn back and go in the other
direction, but cannot. Too much momentum has built up. Will the river change its course?
Possibly, but eventually she’ll still enter the ocean, become the ocean. It’s inevitable one way
or another.

Choreographed by Sugandh, the abstract movements are intricately interwoven with music to represent the mood and the journey of the River.
